Crucifer’s Guide—Holy Eucharist Rite II

Excuse yourself from Sunday School (or arrive at the church) promptly at 10:45. Go to the vesting room and put on a white alb and cincture. Retrieve the cross from the chancel and stand at the double doors of the parlor hallway with the rest of the procession. Please notify one of the acolyte masters if someone is not present.
Processional Hymn
Stand at the rear of the church on the top step. When the priest or choirmaster directs you, process at a steady but slow pace (one step per second) to the front of the church. Stand on the top step and face the altar as the choir and others get to their seats (you should stand close to the altar so that the chalice bearers can get past you to their seats). When the aisle is clear, the torchbearers should come up behind you and pause briefly with you and the altar server at the rail. Turn and step down, putting the cross in its holder as the torchbearers put their torches in their holders and the altar server steps past you with the book. Return to center outside the rail, facing the altar with the other four acolytes. All five acolytes then reverence the altar together. Step up and stand at your seat on the gospel (left) side of the altar.

Follow the service in your bulletin. Participate in prayers and hymns. Be attentive to the service. You are a leader of worship in church! People are paying attention to you and you are setting an example for children of how to behave.
The Sequence Hymn
When the hymn begins playing after the second reading, stand and retrieve the cross. Stand facing the altar outside the altar rail. Watch the altar server’s signal to process. Turn and process to the third pew, then turn and face the altar and stop, resting the cross on the floor.

After the Gospel is read, the book bearer will step to the side. Walk between the torches and process toward the altar. All acolytes pause before the rail. Stay still as the torches and altar server go around you. Put the cross in its holder, then return to center, facing the altar. When the torchbearers come to stand beside you, all three reverence the altar. Step inside the rail and be seated for the sermon. Listen to the sermon and continue to take active part in the service.
The Nicene Creed
Retrieve the participants of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (in the absence of a Sub-Crucifer)
At the part of the Nicene Creed which says “We believe in the Holy Spirit,” step down to the outside of the rail, turn and reverence the altar, then retrieve the wooden cross from its holder. Leave the chancel through the side door and go to the chapel beside the parlor. Let the Catechists know that the Prayer of the People are beginning. When the Catechists are ready, lead them and the children to the transept door. When you hear the priest proclaim, “May the Peace of the Lord be always with you!” lead the children’s procession into the church. Walk all the way down the center aisle to the rear door then turn. All children should be seated by now. Step up into the chancel, put the cross in its holder, then return to your seat.
The Holy Communion
The priest will give you communion first. Return to your seat after receiving Communion and remain alert.
The Recessional Hymn
When the hymn begins playing after the second reading, pause with the torchbearers and sub-crucifer outside the rail and reverence the altar together. Retrieve the brass cross and stand facing the altar outside the altar rail behind the sub-crucifer. Watch the altar server’s signal to process. Turn and lead the procession to the rear of the church.

During and after the Recessional, remain at the rear of the church with other acolytes until the final blessing “Go in peace to love and serve the Lord!” Reply with the congregation, “Thanks be to God!” Walk around the outside of the church. Return to the chancel through the side entrance and place the cross in its holder.

Return to the vesting room and hang your vestments back up where they belong. Thank you for serving!
